Vincenzo Bellini, Master of the Bel Canto Era

Vincenzo Bellini, Master of the bel canto era

This week marks the 180th anniversary of the – premature – death of Vincenzo Bellini, the author of such popular arias as "Casta Diva" (Norma), "Prendi l'anel ti dono" (La Sonnambula), and "Ah, non credea mirarti" (Beatrice di Tenda) and an universally admired-composer.

medici.tv pays tribute to the master of the bel canto era, a true icon of the Italian style. Born in Catania (Sicily) in 1801, trained in Naples, Bellini also lived in Northern Italy, in London and in Paris, where he died prematurely at the age of 34.
A heir of Rossini and Donizetti, Bellini's payed a special attention to the melodic lines, which power greatly influenced composers like Verdi, Wagner, and above all, Chopin.
