NEW YORK CITY BENEFIT TO SUPPORT THE PREMIERE OF AN OPERA BY AMERICAN COMPOSER MICHAEL HERSCH, BASED ON ALTA MEMBER ADAM SORKIN’S TRANSLATION OF MARIN SORESCU’S THE BRIDGE
Marin Sorescu’s posthumous The Bridge (translated by Adam J. Sorkin and Lidia Vianu) is the basis of a new opera, On the Threshold of Winter, by the celebrated American composer Michael
Hersch. The New York music group nunc has organized a benefit concert and party, to support its world premiere performance of this
major work.

The benefit will take place on January 13, 2013, between 4:00 and 7:00 pm
at Spectrum,
121 Ludlow St., NYC, 2nd floor. The event will include an advance peek at the opera in an excerpt performed by gifted soprano Ah Young Hong accompanied by the celebrated young Romanian pianist Matei Varga, Hersch’s Two Lullabies for solo piano in his own performance, and Hersch’s arrangement of one movement of the opera for violin and piano, in which Miranda Cuckson, founder of nunc, will perform. Cuckson will also offer Paganini’s rollicking Duo for violin and bassoon.
The premiere of On the Threshold of Winter is planned for 2013 or 2014 in New York City, at a venue to be announced. A monodrama in two acts, it is scored for soprano and an ensemble of eight. The piece essentially follows the trajectory – the texts often being in fragmented form – of Sorescu’s wrenching final collection of poems, which was published by Bloodaxe in 2004 and awarded the 2005 Poetry Society (U.K.) Prize for European Poetry Translation. Sorescu (1936-1996), suffering from terminal cancer, wrote most of The Bridge during the last weeks of his life.
